This is my twenty-third year teaching at Thornapple – Kellogg. I spent fifteen years teaching second grade and eight years teaching third grade at Lee. The students and staff at Lee are great and I hope you will enjoy your time here.
I completed my undergraduate studies at MSU – Go Spartans! After that, I earned my masters in Early Childhood education at Grand Valley.
I live on Gun Lake with my husband, Jim. He is a civil engineer with MDOT in Kalamazoo and supervises road construction. Yes, he is the guy who causes backups on the highways. My three children are my pride and joy. Owen is 13 and in eighth grade this year. He runs track, plays basketball, and soccer. Carson and Grant are eleven year old identical twin boys in sixth grade. They love basketball, soccer, and jumping on our trampoline. Our whole family loves the outdoors. We spend a lot of time swimming and tubing, riding bikes, or playing tennis, golf, and soccer.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy traveling, camping, reading, lake activities, and working in my flower garden. Last summer we spent 2 weeks camping on Lake Michigan. It was a great time with family and friends - swimming, biking, fishing, and climbing dunes.
I love second graders - their smiles with missing teeth, their love of learning, and their ability to make friends quickly. Seven and eight year olds are wonderful people who are starting to develop more independence, a sense of humor, and self-confidence. I believe in creating an environment where each child is celebrated for his/her unique talents and interests. As parents, you will be amazed at the academic progress made in second grade. Students become fluent readers, avid writers, and problem solvers. It is an exciting time and I can't wait to share all I know about learning with your child.
